Jobs for humanists 2/4
Another week, another set of changes that make the Substack editor difficult to use. Also some jobs!
Museum Technician • National Gallery of Art • February 11, 2022
As far as I can see, this is an entry-level customer service position (I may be wrong). The minimum qualification is one year of general experience. I bet it pays better than adjuncting, and you might be able to turn it into a museum career.
Here are the questions. They suggest some of the duties involve being a gallery attendant. The other qualifications are:
Knowledge of the National Gallery of Art floor plans, including layout of collections/exhibitions, restaurants, gift shops and entrances/exits; its administrative policies and organization; and its collections.
Knowledge of technical tools and systems, including frequent use of tablets, phones, computers for training as well as service and support.
Ability to learn and master ticket reservation systems, queuing apps, and related information management tools.
Strong understanding of and experience in customer service sufficient to serve as a highly visible front of house gallery representative to the general public.
I am not sure how you demonstrate the first one without outing yourself as an art thief? Maybe if you can pitch yourself as a huge nerd?

They “encourage” a cover letter and “writing sample on a humanities topic,” but are not requiring them. The questions are about the KSAs.
